When the world came to a standstill during the pandemic, Alma Lomeli found purpose in party balloons. What began as a simple gesture to bring joy to her daughter’s COVID-era birthday blossomed into Mira Beya Events—a full-scale event décor and rental company serving birthdays, quinceañeras, and now stepping into weddings.
“I’ve always been creative,” Alma shares. “I started offering balloons to friends and family—and my business exploded from there. I haven’t looked back.”
Why Vetting Your Vendors Matters
Choosing the right vendor can make or break your event. According to Alma, you should never be afraid to ask questions—and any reputable vendor will happily answer them.
Bold List of Must-Ask Questions:
Can I see reviews or testimonials?
Are you licensed and insured?
What is your cancellation or change policy?
Do you offer a clear, detailed contract?
“Text messages don’t protect you in court,” Alma reminds. “A signed contract does.”
Also, always review their portfolio. Make sure their style matches your vision. Alma notes that every vendor has a signature look—make sure it aligns with your event goals.
Communication is Everything
Clear communication keeps both vendors and clients on the same page. Here’s what Alma recommends:
(Tips):
Establish business hours and preferred contact methods
Set calendar touchpoints to check in (weeks before, days before, etc.)
Allow room for client questions with clear boundaries
Confirm event details in a contract (timeline, contact info, payment terms, cancellation policy)
“An organized vendor will always walk you through each step of the process,” she says.
Budget Smart—Not Cheap
We’ve all heard, “You get what you pay for”—and in the event industry, that often rings true.
“Cheaper isn’t always better. Instead, work with vendors who are willing to customize within your budget.”
Alma suggests creating a “needs vs. wants” list to prioritize, and looking for vendors who offer bundle packages or multi-service discounts.
Experience Takes Time
“Experience comes from experience—no one starts out knowing it all.”
While newer vendors may be more affordable, seasoned professionals bring smoother systems, faster problem-solving, and more reliable results. Alma also recommends choosing vendors who continue to learn new skills, especially those who can collaborate and adapt when needed.
“It’s about community over competition. Helping someone grow only brings good karma back.”
Collaboration Over Competition
The event world thrives on teamwork. Alma encourages vendors to introduce themselves, connect, and collaborate with others during events.
“You never know when another vendor could become your best collaborator—or refer you to your next client.”
As a planner, she always reaches out to all vendors ahead of time to ensure a smooth event day.
Where to Spend vs. Where to DIY
When it comes to budgeting, Alma recommends investing in the professionals who make your event run smoothly.
Bold List: Must-Have Hires
Event planner/decorator
Catering
DJ or band
Florist
Photographer/Videographer
DIY-Optional Tasks:
Invitations
Party favors
Signage
Also, don’t be afraid to ask your vendors for referrals. Most know which fellow creatives do excellent work—and who to avoid.
Final Words of Wisdom
Planning an event—big or small—can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be.
“Stay organized, find the right vendors, ask the right questions, and set a clear timeline. And most of all—have fun!”
